Well, it looks like they're all dead. I was so sorry to read this. I personally e-mailed the zoo to complain, but my e-mails are bouncing back! My e-mail to the German Embassy in London hasn't though!

REALLY CAN'T BELIVE WHAT I HAVE READ!

How heartless can they be? - I geuss the poor mother that ate them thought more of them than the keepers.

Why didn't the german government step in?

For a ZOO to say somthing isn't natural is crazy! - They're in capticaty not in the wild !

Is this not the same zoo of a few years back?

I am not sure, but l do recall a similiar incident in Europe a little awhiles aback.

They attempted a hand rear than and they were slammed by the anti establishments for cruelty in trying to save the cubs!

Perhaps the zoo can not risk losing their zoo as was threatened back then?

Welcome to the world of the antis.

Save the cubs - antis think you are defying the natural world.

Allow the cubs to die and then you are slammed by the private market.

Mmm, tough choice to be made by the administrators really.

Who has more power over the zoos, us, administrators or the minority who control the empathy voters?

How can they draw a line at what is natural and when isnt when the polar bear isnt in a natural environment. There is a limit to what should and shouldnt be kept as a pet / exhibition, and polar bears are definatly a shouldnt!

I don't understand, why when you're breeding a rare, endangered animal, you wouldn't at least hook up cameras in the den so you could at least know what was happening.

I don't think it should even be an issue. If an animal has babies you look after them. It's the same with us, if our reptiles or pets breed we are prepared to look after them. Why breed the bear if you aren't prepared to make sure the babies live by any means possible. Vaccinations, medical care, food every day - these things aren't natural but they help the animals survive, surely it's the same for the cubs.

I agree with you all, the zoo is the first state of conservation.

And with the falling numbers of the Polar Bear in its natural element, any work that brings more of this species into the world should be encouraged, however, the anti establishment in Europe approached the government and the government backed down and away from the zoo.

What you must understand, and l am not just harping on is this: the antis may be smaller in number than that of the private keeper - BUT they have their voices heard, they make things happen when they want to, they get listened to.

So you shout loud enough, you'll get heard, you don't, and then you will lose your rights.

Odd isn't, with 2 out of 3 households over here that actually keep animals, the minority have the same affect and seemingly keep winning.

The zoo l would say have chosen much to their reluctance to allow this perilous thing to occur.

Sad but truth.

Well there is a saying about "he who shouts loudest" and it's true!

If people protest loud enough and long enough (even when they're in the wrong), organisations begin to listen, if only to shut them up!!! It's wrong, but it happens!

My point is, however, that if they are going to keep polar bears (or indeed any animal) in an unnatural environment and let us all be sure that captivity is an unnatural environment (they can't hibernate for a start because the temps are usually too high and hibernation plays its part in breeding), then they shouldn't allow the bears to breed - is that too simplistic a view???

Is it too simplistic a view?

Of course not.

But zoos are run by administrators, and administrations are governed.

Media impact can serve good and bad.

The antis use everything in their powers to get their message delivered.

They get their messages listened to.

I don't agree with this.

Should they keep the Polars, should they have them in their collection?

Should their administrations give in to the anti establishments?

Should DEFRA/Government allow themselves to be governed by the RSPCA?

Should the empathy voter have more information?

It is not down to the visitor to the zoo, it is not down to the sympathy vote-no!

Its down to politics - not animal welfare.

Everything now is political, politically correct, pc!

If it isn't PC, then it is simply not correct under any circumstances.
