How terrible, as you say - it is not a natural environment. If she had cancer, would they let the adult die or would they put her to sleep? If she had a huge gaping wound from fighting, would they patch it up, or let it get infected as it would in the wild?
If they don't want to hand rear the cubs they should at least put them out of their misery, not let them die suffering. |

This really is vile and selfish.
Couldnt agree more with both you and christy. In the wild conditions would have been much differnt, and the mother would have been hibernating thorough the birth, and fist period of suckling, so where she is awake, she has no maternal insticts. If they are letting them breed, then they should provide adiquiate care for mother and babies, this means taking the mothers role in this situation. People are so retarded at times!

German zoo is slammed for letting polar bear cubs starve | the Daily Mail here is the link so you guys can read the story for yourselves something needs to be done alot of people have said they are contacting the german embassy, These are as you have said endangered animals if these were kitten or puppies and someone was letting them strave the authories would intereve nright away and take legal action why should this case be any different cruelty after all is still cruelty

I think it's a disgrace. Whether or not this man believes they wouldn't survive in the wild, to allow them to die a horrible death by starvation is nothing short of cruel and surely goes against any zoo policy? If he doesn't want to hand rear them because that isn't natural, then he should have them euthanased!!

This was my very first comment after seeing it on the news last night. Your right its not a natural state for her to be in, its captivity and probably the very reason she abandoned her babies. In the wild she would have fattened up and hibernate in a big den underground, she doesn't have any of that in captivity and is unnaturally forced to be awake and on show!!
The footage was rather startling she was very small and looked incredibly underweight. Marina ![]() |

I agree that this is awful: if the cubs are not going to used for future breeding to continue the captive population, then they should be euthanised.
I only wonder if they think that allowing the cubs to starve in with the female will increase the chances of her feeding her next cubs? Not that I think this would work or justifies any of it...

thes cubs should be hand reared. 3 bears who are totally dependent on humans for the rest of their lives is better than 3 corpses.
They will be in a zoo for the rest of their lives but this fate would have awaited them anyway. They would make great educational animals as well as superb breeders whose offspring maybe cared for naturally and could be realised. |
