Had this problem in the same area, I used some warm water and dissolved some salt in it and just used the cotten wool balls and just gently cleaned the area twice a day, helps keep it clean
Hope that helps

salt water probably the best, as it will kill bacteria, but not prevent healing, also try and keep the absess from filling again, just b cleaning, it saves a fair few probs.

I know he may not like it but I found wrapping my rap in a towel and holding it tightly round his neck so they cant push or pull there head away.I did this with mine but only needed to do it a few times as i gave him a treat after and he learnt he got this if he behaved

Make your saline solution up as 1 teaspoon salt to 1 pint of warm water or it will sting to much. Poor ratty but better out than in as they say

Yeah as Vicky said salt water is the best to clean, I had the same problem the other day when I was cleaning, I noticed one of my bald males had a poorly eye, on closer inspection what I thought was an infection and gunk was actually a piece of megazorb in his bottom eye lid I had to bathe it, then hold him in a towel and move the piece upwards with the corner of the towel and then pull it out with tweezers, he didn't like me messing but you could see how he relaxed once it was out!! I then used a bit of optrex and bathed his eye just to clear any gunk remaining

Another good thing to fill abscesses with is honey. It's got natural healing properties and keeps it moist. Whenever I've used it for abscesses, I've cleaned it with salt water first, then put the honey in the open wound.
