Default Emu's

This is totally fuelled by the add in the classified section.

Has anybody kept them whats their care like? Just want to know more about them really to feed my curiosity.

My sister in law has one in California - sad story. She is known for her love of animals, and often is given rescue cases. Someone had an emu farm and neglected them badly - this one was the only one left alive or that didn't have to be destroyed. It had bad legs, mostly bald etc. Very scared of humans! Not very safe to go near as they can kick out frontwards and cause a lot of damage.

3 years after she was given it, anyone can go in its pen (with care!), and if you touch its head it will drop to the floor so you can give its back a good massage! Absolutely loves that and sort of goes into a trance with its eyes shut!

Lovely animal, but you do need a lot of space.

When they had the wildfires in California last autumn, they managed to evacuate the llamas and giant tortoises (as well as all the snakes and lizards they keep inside), but couldn't move the emu. When the fires got really close they went back and opened her pen.

The fires got within 200 yds of the house, but were then stopped. When they returned home they found Emily in her pen - she obviously thought staying home was the safest bet!

(Although someone has said emus don't have very big brains, and she probably didn't notice the door of her pen open.....)
