Its thought of to be unethical for a vet to remove scent glands if not for medical purposes. Much like tail docking in puppies. Think you will be lucky to find a vet willing to do this im afraid.

Thankfully once a neutered male will lose alot of his smell. A spayed female will be even less smelly. There are some people who keep ferrets indoors but bear in mind if they can see a gap they'll try and get into it. Ferret proofing the house would be neccessary.

Im not a ferret keeper myself but there are some on here so hopefully they'll reply for you.

Hi,
I dont post alot as i am more of a reader but i thought i would share my knowledge.
I have 4 hob ferrets and one one jill and they all live indoors and free range all day. They have all been spayed/neutered and i dont think they smell at all. There may be a musty sort of smell but nothing offensive at all.I never have any complaints from visitors about the smells.

I find its the poo rather than the ferrets that stinks, so making sure they are cleaned out often will be very helpful too

When you say 'house ferret' do you mean free romaing? I was just thinking that ferrets do tend to like to 'play' with other animals and you may find your dogs won't react well to that

i have a house ferret and she has free roam of the kitchen shes litter tray trained and she sleeps in a large cage ,while she does have a bit of a smell to her which seems to be going now ive had her spayed, the main smell comes from the oils from their skin which seem stop once theyve been castrated or spayed as they wont be breeding so dont have to be attracting a mate with their ferrety perfume ,they can give off a smell like a skunk when frightend but it happens very rarely well it does with mine anyway, jills have half the smell than hobs do so if your just after a pet ferret that you dont really want to smell much get a jill ,but if you dont clean there cages daily and wash there bedding regularly you`ll find they will start to smell

I have 4 ferrets that are kept outside and I have been keeping ferrets for over 16years and I find that its the conditions that they are kept in that makes the difference in smell.
If they are kept in small filty conditions and lying in there own dirt and pee they really stink, but keep them clean and dry and even in the breeding season they dont smell to bad.
Should have albino and polecat babies if anyone interested this year

ah thanks guys!

what i meant by house ferret was that it would have free roam of the house when one if us is about and able to watch it. otherwise, if were out or at bedtime, it would be in the cage. (which is a very big plastic & wire cage what my giant house rabbit used to sleep in)
i have my rabbits in the house when it gets bitterly cold and i keep them very clean so they dont stink the house out. so i supose if my partners willing to clean the ferret out twice a day like i do my bunnys, itl be ok.

ive said i like the look of the albino ones to my partner. i dunno were hes gonna get one from tho! ive not seen any around here for ages!

il leave it upto him.

thanks for the advice!

Merica ferret welfare in Coventry, have LOTS of albinos needing new homes, unfortunately many people seem to favour poley coloured ferrets so the albinos seem to get left behind
