They require a basic set up and are very hardy. They thrive in groups and look stunning together! The males when calling sound a bit like fbt's but more melodic, hard to describe really but not a harsh croak or overly loud or brash. If you could hear me I am making the sound they make so I can describe it
This is how I keep mine, arboreal exo terra terrariums or tanks, substrate: repti bark or choir brick. Large water bowl treat the water with repti-safe or similar. Some rocks they like rocks, or even broken clay plant pots, fake plants, or real plants if you use a uv tube of 2% for the plants such as arcadia freshwater tubes (about £7 each these are) no higher uv tube than this frogs do not require uv at all. I keep humidity up by keeping the substrate damp and spraying once per day. Well supplemented crickets, locusts they love roaches, etc for food. My room that thye live in is continually at 78f so I do not provide any other heat source. A mat can be used on the external side of the tank with a stat if so required, allow for a slight temp drop at night. My room achieves this naturally so I do not use any mats or stats. If you want you can add a stick on background to the tank this sets it off nicely or if you want to go the whole hog, attach soem 3d cork bark background to the sides of the tanks and grow soem moss and lichen on it, or if you want to get even more technical why not create a complete mini eco self sustaining environment, e.g. hydra lyca, membrane cover with substrate, use plant growth lights, add various mosses and plants add springtails and other custodial insects. This would make a superb display showcase for these stunning frogs. I have just recently aquired a large custom built German tank from e-bay that I am going to set up as a mini eco system for some of the mossy frogs. Will take time and work but worth the effort. I first saw these frogs about two years ago and was overwhelmed with their beauty, and it took me about 15 months to find some. Luckily enough I obtained three different groups all CB from mixed bloodlines. There are approx 6 other speices of theloderma but they are not as eye catching as the Corticale. I beleive two new species have now been discovered that are quite dull and much smaller. Oh someone asked how big they get, max size 7-9cm's. The only other speices I have seen available in the UK is the Hill Garden Mossy frog, selling at £125 each. Nowhere near as nice as the true Corticale. Brief info: extract from a website: The Mossy Frog, Theloderma corticale, lives in karst zones of northern Vietnam. They make their home in flooded caves and deep niches in the banks of mountain streams. Their range includes the provinces of Vinh Phu, Back Tahi, Cao Bang, and Lang Son. They can be found from 700-1500 m elevation. Their range is decreasing due to habitat destruction and some biologists consider their status as threatened or endangered. Mossy Frogs have been successfully maintained at daytime temperatures of 26– 30 degrees C (79– 86 degrees F) and 22 – 24 degrees C (72 – 75 degrees F) at night. I maintain mine at a constant 78 degrees F both night and day. It is know that local temperatures drop to 4 – 5 degrees C (39 – 41 degrees F) during the winter in their range. A cooling period may or may not be necessary to stimulate breeding and amplexus. I initially cooled my frogs a few degrees in late summer/early fall and breeding commenced shortly thereafter. Clutch size varies from 10 to 40 eggs. Eggs that are deposited in the water fail to develop. Tadpoles can be raised together (they are not cannibalistic) in an aerated aquarium in conditioned water. The tadpoles should be fed daily on Spirulina flakes. With routine care you will be able to enjoy these unique frogs. They are not difficult to keep and can provide a lot of enjoyment for their owner. I hope the info helps. Rick I can supply fully set ups if required at trade prices. |
