It is a scam, I've had the same sort of response to an ad for a pram and a dog. Next thing he wants to send you a cheque for much more money than the price of the item you're selling, asks you to cash his cheque, give some to somebody he owes money to and take a generous cut as your commision. It sounds so convoluted you wonder if anyone would fall for it, but apparently people do. The scam is that the cheque bounces, but by the time you find out you have allready parted with goods and money. The banks don't exactly advertise the fact that they officially clear a cheque by certain day, even if they haven't got it cashed and if it subsequently bounces, they'll blame delay in post and claw the money back from your account.
