dont want to overtake but skimmers arnt needed on small tanks weekly water changes are fine. If you want a reef, its really as simple as fill it with water get the correct SG (1.024-5) add you LR and wait until levels drop, add clean up crew then a fish then when the tank is more mature you can add corals. I did a 12 gallon fish only (still have it) and its really just a freshwater tank with coral sand and salt water.

couldnt have put it better myself,theres no need for protein skimmer as its a small self contained tank
