Default Tortoise WANTED

hi all, it is not me that wants one but a friend of mine. I said I'd ask on here for him to see whats about. I know nothing about these animals and I won't pretend that I do so if you do reply any of you make it as simple as you can for me to relay back! In particular he wants to know how much they cost as he has promised his niece one and I think he is regretting it now! lol

Thanks all!

A shop by me does Horsefields at £95 and Hermanns at £110, but if you check out this site there are a list of breeders who might be nearer.

http://www.tortoise-world.com/

check out the breeders section.

Have a look on http://www.shelledwarriors.co.uk and look on the for sale section, I know TT has an advert on there.

Remember not only are they expensive but they need special eqipment like UV light and suppliments. UV tubes need replacing every 6-12 months and must be within 12" of the animal. Heating should be from ceramics with a pluse thermostat and not by heat mat. Tortiose prices start from about £95 upwards from a shop but could be upto and over £200. the best advise i can and you can give would to be to spend five or ten pound on a good book before purchasing one and before looking to buy one. Dont believe everything a shop tells you.

Are Torts really expensive?! depends on the overal picture I guess...Lets say a year old tort costs a £100...complete appropriate set up approx. £75...Torts do need a new UVB every 6 to 9 months...Supplements in the form of limestone flour, 3 kilo tub is less than £5. other supplements used occasionally...Substrate being Aubiose/hemp, huge bale of it for £7.50...But here is the BIG difference, Food for a tort, because its vitually free all year round...For 10 months of the year you just pic weeds, it takes 5 minutes to pick/wash/feed...and the other 2 months your tort is hibernating (4 months for adults!)...Now, how much does it cost to feed a lizard or snake for just one year ???...So are torts really expensive ???!!!...PS. I agree on NO heat mat, but you dont need ceramic heaters/pluse thermostats, just an ordinary spot light/bulb that can maintain a hot spot of approx. 95 degrees, and of coarse as much natural sunlight as possible, and thats free too  !!!...T.T.
