as for photoshop being a hard and skillfull programe, my 7 year old sister uses it with her eyes shut....
Digital photography is the main platform of the art these days and you'd be hard pushed to find an image at professional level or in competition that hasn't been retouched/ edited on the computer, the skill in photoshop etc is the subtlety which is not that easy to master, also no amount of editing in the computer can make up for a poorly composed/ lit photo.

Programmes like photoshop are intended to enhance the overall quality of a digital image and a competition like POTM is intended to be won by the photo which is best by majority vote. Those who enter have to take pics to the best of their ability using whatever resources they have available. The comp is just as likely to be won by someone using a 5 megapixel camera phone as it is by someone using a £3000 canon and a £400 computer programme because the initial skill is in taking the image in the first place, no amount of photoshopping can disguise a bad photo or add personality to a shot that was initially lacking it.

I used to do film photography before moving onto digital and i wouldn't say digital has made my job much easier except the obvious perks of not having to change films everytime the light changes.

Take a look at my website and see if you can tell which images are photoshopped and which are straight off the card, also tell me if you think the editing i have done has somehow stopped these images being my own.

P.s. My 7 year old nephew can use spellcheck with his eyes closed, maybe you'd care to give it a go?

Cheers Jake

Also like your pic, both original and enhanced versions, you should do four in different colours an get them printed onto square canvases, would look very warhol chic.

im not desputing how good photoshop is im just saying that a photo competition is about camera skills, not computer skills...

photography is big in my family, have 2 close relatives who do it for a living, and alot of things they have entered in has specified NO EDITING, not that im sure how they know...

like i said before photos should not be judged on quality or content alone, but a mix of both. you obviously are a good photographer and you know your stuff, i just feel a competition for photography should be on camera skills alone, not computer editing, however with photoshop being a good and fun way to manipulate images perhaps we could do a POTM on pure photoshop pics, or other editing software for a bit of fun, without the seriousness competition brings out in us all...

id like to say im not digging at anyone or saying im right your wrong, just giving my views. turning into a good discution, lets try and keep it that way, as we maybe able to learn things from eachother.

nice pics, counted 4-5 that i think have had some tampering/effects on

dave

p.s just one dig, sorry cant help my speling, not the brightest lad, but if your 7 year old can use spellcheck with his eyes closed he must have super powers, love to know how he knows what is on the screen! dont take kindly to coments on my intelegence level, not your place to judge!

Sorry Knighty, I'm normally the last one to pick on someone for there spelling but your comments re photoshop making things too easy and being childsplay really cut deep as i've been studying it for a while now and felt you were having a go despite my best efforts to keep my comments civilised.

(also, how does yer wee sister manage it then? lol)

Still friends?

(P.s. Your spelling doesn't reflect your intelligence, my step-son is a really smart wee kid but has mild dyslexia)

Using photoshop is an extension of camera skills anyway, before digital, image manipulations would be done in the dark room - that's all computer programmes are these days, digital darkrooms - so what you're really saying is that 15 years ago you would object to someone entering if they had theor own dark room instead of using a chemist etc to develop their photos.

Incidentally the edit that Jake has used on his photo is one i used frequently when i did 35mm film photography.

I have some pretty expensive computer programmes that i use for my professional work, but any photo's you see on here (and on my website at the moment) have been edited using Elements 5 which you can pick up for around £100, i used this as it's a quick fix for cropping/ resizing images on my laptop and making minor adjustments. i don't feel it's unfair of me to use it in any way shape or form as it's readily available to anyone with a computer.
