Default Searching my guts out for a Painted Turtle.

I'm in desperate want for a Painted Turtle. I've got the whole set up for it, and got told a pet shop could get them, but they can't. I can't find one anywhere. I want it as small as possible, but I can't find one. Only place I can is the States and nobody will ship it.

Anyone selling/breeding or know where to get one?

You'll have trouble finding one in the UK, especially a young one as they haven't been imported for years, and no-one is currently breeding them successfully afaik.

I have 5 adult females and 2 males and I'm actively trying to breed them, but any hatchlings if I'm successful won't be available for a few years at least.

I have acquired 6 of mine in the past year, all as adults, so they are around but you need to have the right contacts to find them.

There are breeders in Holland if you're prepared to make the trip.

Which species did you want anyway?

I'm looking for a pretty black/dark green one with patterns, like red stripes.

I have a YBS and the Eastern Painted is just like it, minus the colours, and they need the same temps.

I think you'll be extremely lucky to find an Eastern Painted in the UK, if you do it'll be an adult unless there's someone breeding them that I'm unaware of.

The thing is they are now rare, and anyone who has one and appreciates what they've got is unlikely to part with it.

The ones I have are Southern Painteds, the smallest and IMO the prettiest of all the painted turtles.

Woah, hell yeah! I'd love a Southern. They're actually the ones I was looking for, but the closest I could find was Eastern.

Are you breeding?

Me personally, no!

But I'm hoping the turts do, that was the purpose of assembling this group of males and females. But as I said even if I'm successful I won't be making any hatchlings available for some time, some will be going to people who have helped me to find these adults, and the rest will be kept back for breeding purposes as the group will need fresh blood in future.

we've got two Central American painted wood turtles (Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima manni) at the shop - Pythons Lair in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
