all species are different. The african torts are apparently V. prolific in the amount of eggs they lay in every clutch and also in the amount of clutches per season. They hatching times also vary HUGELY even in the same clutch. i think its easy to LET your tortoises breed but to have any real success you need to follow good husbandry practices, after all a happy group of torts is alot more likely to produce healthy viable eggs and keep on doing so. And there is also a great deal of debate on the incubation of eggs. if the conditions are not "just so" then they will all fail to develop. again, incubation factors depend on the species.

You can breed just two tortoises, although you will have to watch the male does not stress the female two much !!
One species i keep i only have a pair they live together just fine. As with everything read all you can - plenty of people are breeding tortoises in the UK without problems so go for it. A good place to start : Tortoise Trust Web - Start Page Make sure your dont try and cross breed, so if your starting with a compatiable pair, ie same species, and sub species you'll get a lot of enjoyment from it, plus you'll have a few more tortoises !!!!! Its not easy, all species lay different clutch sizes pancakes just lay one egg a time, my reds lay 3-9 eggs a clutch.
Your conditions have to be spot on, temp, enclosure etc Also you have to find a compatable male that will do the job lol
