these dont hibenate:

Leopard tortoises, Red foot and Yellow foots, Hingebacks, Eygptian tortoises, Pancake tortoises and Giant African spurred tortoises & indian star.

do hibenate:

Spur-Thighed" or "Greek" tortoise
Hermann's Tortoise
Marginated tortoise
Horsfield's or Russian tortoise

this is what iv found on the internet, if im worng sum1 will put me straight.
i THINK u shudnt hibenate a tortoise in the first few years of life????
& if its ill/underweight shud be avoided. I think after the first hibenation YES if healthy it should be hibenated every year.....i believe if not can cause internal problems in the long run.

i dont av an hibentaing tortoise so im NOT 100% sure & as i say sum1 will put me right if im wrong. HOPE THIS HELPS

Easy question... There are no tortoises that require hibernation. If you keep any tortoise under constant optimal conditions it will not be inclined to hibernate.

Hibernation (which is not true hibernation in most reptiles) is a reaction to temperatures dropping to suboptimal levels.

Im getting a hermanns soon, I would rather not hibernate. Does anyone know if there are health risks involved in not doing so?

If anyone tells you there are health issues... ask them to show you some evidence... not proof... just evidence.

Again... if you give it a little thought there is much evidence that hibernation can do harm... there is no evidence that not hibernating can do harm.

If a tort would naturally hibernate then why would you not hibernate them?

Hibernation is easy. Obviously you are going to worry about it the first time you do it... I did! But providing you do things the right way there is no need to worry.

If anyone wants to know the exact way I do things they only have to pm me, I am more than happy to send them a step by step guide to what I do with my Hermann's every year.

By the way, my torts are up having had a 12 weeks hibernation, my younger one is 2 years old, she had 12 weeks and lost 1g in weight

The novice keeper may get the impression that you ED, do not hibernate any of your torts period, from your post in this thread???

I cannot remember if you indeed do actually hibernate any of your torts...So just to clarify please ed...Do you hibernate any of your torts past or present???...T.T.
