Mine hibernate, usually made up for what little weight they have lost in under 2 weeks of emerging. IMO they seem a lot happier and healthier as a result.

You always know when it's time to hibernate as the torts slow down and stop eating. Length of hibernation always goes on the torts weight, size and age. Never be scared of hibernation it's perfectly natural.

Mine don't decide it is time to hibernate, they would eat all winter if I let them. I decide when to start their wind down. I normally do that mid November, which means they are in the fridge in December. No matter what their age or size they get 12 weeks hibernation, I would only wake them up before that if they had lost 10% of their weight, which has never happened.

I think that hibernating torts should hibernate just as they would if they were in captivity. I can't say what would happen if you didn't do it, as apart from the first year I had my first tort I have always hibernated them. I can say though, they seem to have a new lease of life after they have hibernated.
