This special tort was born with several problems, it is partially sighted, it was very small when born, it had a huge yolk sac still attached, etc. As you can clearly see in the photo, it has not grown to anywhere near that of its age, it is infact a little over 3 and a half years old?! I could have hand fed this tort, but I chose to leave it to its own devices...Anyway, on to hibernating this little fellow.
The first winter, I chose not to hibernate, I felt it was just too small, fragile. The 2nd winter, I hibernated it for 6 weeks (even though it was smaller than torts, more than half its age) This 3rd winter, I hibernated it from early Dec. 07 to Mid. Feb. 08, which was a total of 8 weeks + 6 days, using the box method. I did have to wake this tort from hibernation too, it was still down. Within 24 to 36 hours, this tort was basking/drinking/eating...
If I can hibernate this tort (with all it's disadvantages)...then...anyone can hibernate successfully.
Here are several photos, showing unusual small size, and boxing up for "the big sleep"...
T.T.
Note- This tort is a Mediterranean Spur-thighed Ibera.
