UV Lighting for Reptiles: A new problem with high UVB output fluorescent compact lamps and tubes?

Hi, this is a good link to look over. I came across is when my tort became ill and an expert said it could be due to his lamp, after changing it he quickly perked up!!

Just thought i'd add it as i've noticed a few threads with people wondering about lamps.

I believe the ZooMed Compact is a spotlight and not a flood lamp. The beam on that lamp is highly concentrated or focused. This not only concentrates the light but also the UV rays. The wattage might not be the problem but the type of bulb might.

I have witnessed the same thing myself with bearded dragons, having several vivs fitted with a new UV compact they all developed conjunctivitus but after removing the compacts and changing to a lower percentage it cleared up quite quickly.

The ZooMed Compact is just a compact flourescent lamp, the same as any other compact, and the problem with the high output ones is quite well known. All that is required to make them safe is to observe an initial "burn-in" period and then follow the minimum mounting distance recommendations.

I have a repti-glo 10.0, and Balders keeps his eyes shut just as he wakes up. I cant see any swelling. But when I have a 100w light bulb his eyes were shut most of the day!
That link is a good read, glad you found it :o)
