Default Mediam sized tortoises for a beginner!

i have managed since getting my boa constrictor BCI to convert my whole family to reptiles! my two brothers have bought a leopard gecko and the other a bearded dragon, now my sister is thinking of getting a tortoise! what in all your professional opinions is the best one to get! she wants one that doesn't grow massive but still isn't tiny! like no larger than 20 inches long and no smaller than 10 inches (just a guess). I'm a snake man so have no clue about tortoises but hope you can all point me in the right direction!

Hermanns

Then your only left with a red foot, that requires humdity but easily done with a dampish substrate.

how much space can you give a tortoise in the garden? if its only a small patch like maybe ten foot by 6 foot then a hermanns(or similar) or horsfield are better suited. But if you have a acre with a greenhouse then you can look towards the small africans such as leopards, they are a good size and will keep your grass down! but the downside of the larger torts are that they dont hibernate and need heat and food ALL YEAR! the meds just get hibernated and woken up when there is enough weeds to feed them. Tortoises dont thrive if they are left to crawl around in a living room or kitchen. they are very strong and can be destructive so they need specialist indoor(or heated outdoor) accomodation for cold dayswith uvb lights and basking lamps. the Tortoise trust does a good range of info sheets that you can print off and show the family.
