As a few of you know, I am very lucky to own an egyptian tortoise. However as it is proving almost impossible to get a mate for it, I am considering possibly selling to someone who has other egyptians. These beautiful torts are now very rare and I do feel that any kept in captivity should be bred if possible. I am now trying to acquire another one from europe, if I am unsuccessful I may then consider selling to someone suitable. If anyone knows anyone who has other egyptians and may be interested please let me know.

Here's some food for thought...
If you know another keeper who has Egyptians you might consider giving your Egyptian to them on a breeding loan. It would be preferable to give it to a keeper you can trust and one who has already bred Egyptians. Quote:

Yeah, I would only consider rehoming to someone with experience of egyptians, but I am still hoping to be lucky and find another in europe.

I'm not talking about rehoming.
A breeding loan would be where you give the tortoise to a person who is familiar with breeding Egyptians. If they are successful breeding your tortoise... they get the first hatched baby... you get the second... and so on. That is the standard tortoise breeding agreement we have here in the states.

It's a gamble but it puts your tortoise in a breeding situation and you can continue to look for a mate while presenting the opportunity to get babies.
On female can lay up to 12 eggs a year. There is a guy here in the states who just produced 40 eggs this season from 7 females.

If you do not have any luck in Europe then I would be interested if I could afford. Naturally I have paperwork, pictures or I can show you them in person. I would not be interested in a loan due to disease (not saying your torts are sick though) risks.

I can understand not being interested in a breeding loan due to the responsibility but... disease?
Yet you would be interested in purchasing it? ...interesting.

Yes but if you send your animals off to somebody else then with the greatest of respect to the O.P you are not in control of yours animals hygiene so when it comes back home in may be contaminated. If I buy the animal I would quarantine it and the introduce it after a time that I would see fit. It is like holiday centerers for torts. Not for me !!! |
