Default Redfoot Enclosure

my sister is thinking of getting a red foot tortoise as she wants a medium sized tortoise that doesn't hibernate! she has one of these 1500mm by 700mm indoor rabbit enclosures, what are you thoughts of these for red foots? every site i go on contradicts the next some say vivs some say never use a viv, i know they require humid conditions but couldn't you just have a humid hide for it to go in at night? the rabbit hutch in question is massive (really tall) so my dad was going to build a sort of wooden insert which would create another level converin a third of the cage with a ramp going up to it (this will have slate on it and a heat/basking lamp above it getting it closer to it!) so it has a lot of roaming area then underneath can have a heat mat underneath it and a hide! the overhead she was putting a uvb 10 strip bulb, then she was thinking of furnishing it to the hilt with all sorts of random weeds and things. I am a snake person my self so have no idea about the world of shelled heps but I'm starting to like the idea (quite cute little things) and was just wondering if this all sounds alright or is this not ok? also i know that tortoises live for a long time but how long do they take to get full grown? cheers for your help people and look forward to your comments!

Some say reds can use a viv but i dont use them

You have to think how you will heat the rabbit enclosure, i recommend 27 in cool spots and 32c in warm.

Red foots do grow large but it takes 10 years or so to reach adult size which can be 11-16 inches normally around 12 inches, so please think ahead.

thats plenty of time! we have loads of room in the garden and as its being referbed as we speak and a quike alteration here and there would make a nice little outside enclosure in the next year or two! i can easily get those sort of temps with a heat lamp and a heat mat on a stat! i take it its like all herps giving them the chance to choose what temp they want to be at, and getting a good heat gradient to make this easy for them!

Reds are tropical tortoises dont forget they cannot be outside all the time unless you have a heated shed/ hide. I only put mine outside on really warm days.

Humidity must be provided, in your rabbit cage i suggest using a good layer of top soil mixed with sand 60/40 and a layer of top soil, spray twise a day. The repti bark will dry out but the soil and sand should stay moist to hold the humidity.

Make sure the red can't see the cage or he might try and get through it.

Even in the day it can been too cool. I woudl think about a heated hide if you want them outside most of the time.
