I am looking for a UV/Heat Bulb and holder for my tortoise table. I have looked on the tortoise trust website and they highly recommend them and they last alot longer than tubes. Would this mean that I don't need a tube and a separate spotlight?
Also can anyone recommend a good one? TIA |

by far the most common uvb heat lamp is the powersun160w. this is great, projects loads of uvb for a good distance and decay is kept to a minimum after the first few uses. You need a ceramic holder and reflector to use this though, a normal holder and lead will melt and burn VERY quick!

whilst working in my shop i have had many uv heats come back after six months and the zoo med repti sun stripe lights actually last up to 12 months the compact uv at first was supposed to last 12 months but only really lasts around six but it also depends on which brand you use zoo med are one of the best and usually last half as long as any of the exo terra products hence the price of the exo terra lights

I had one mervury vapor bulb that lasted 7 years. At that time it was producing more UVB than a brand new tube type bulb.
The majority of the new bulbs lasted anywere from 1 day to a few months which is why I don't use them anymore. |

All the MVBs I know of are guaranteed for at least 6 months, and flourescents are recommended to be replaced after 6 months, as although they may still be "working" the amount of UV they emit after that time is so low as to be virtually useless.
I've heard from lots of people who's MVBs have lasted well over a year, often 2 or 3, and very few that have failed in less than a year. If they fail within 6 months of course you get a free replacement anyway. |
