Default Tortoise hibernation

What tortoise's need to hibernate and do not need to hibernate

I Think hermann and horsefields need to

Chris

And is there any other way apart from the "fridge" method

Yes Hermann and Horsfield hibernate... most Med species do thought not the Tunisian.

The tropical species which is okay for a beginner which doesn't hibernate is the redfoot. There are others that don't but they may not be the best for a beginner like yourself.

Have you definitely decided on a tort now or are you still researching?

Oh... you also asked about hibernation... there are other methods than the fridge... the boxed method in a cool place (with a pretty much constant temp not below freezing and not above 10degs) is a method a lot of people use.

You don't HAVE to hibernate them, just cool them down and watch that you do not feed them too much.

I did not hibernate my torts for 4 years and there are no ill effects

Redfoots are different to keep than the Med species. Here's a good care sheet for you to look at:

Redfooted Tortoise Caresheet

Clive did you notice any difference in their growth since you stopped hibernating... such as more pyramiding?

PM me if you prefer.

No but I only feed them occasionally. Don't get me wrong it is probably best to hibernate but I can see why this would put a new tort keeper off. I will hibernate next year as I am now more experienced and have more courage. Hibernation is essential if you want to breed to get the male sperm count up so I have been told !

they deffinately seem to be happier and well, more horny after a good long sleep!

hibernation sets up there immune system and breeding instincts a treat. i know people that ahve managed to breed a few times without hibernation but they have also got better reults and bigger healthier clutches of eggs AFTER a hibernation, even a short one of just a few weeks.
