The tortoises like it and do well on it... that's what counts and is not really debatable.

while i dont use the diet myself, in the interest of balance, there ARE some well known, respected breeders that use pellet food. and the World Chelonia Trust acknowledges it as being a food that redfoots thrive on. Ed has had wonderful results using the diet. Alot of this debate comes down to preconcieved notions that pellets are the food of the devil. Yet Ed has offered us pictures and information that shows his torts have more than thrived on the diets.

Also Ed has never said that pellets are better than a weed diet, he has said that pellets are better than a weed diet where there is a limited variety of less than 35 types of weeds. in the wild a tortoise would eat a huge variation in plant matter. so if we only routinely offer 5 types of salad leaves from asda (oh how nutritious) and some dandies, clover, plantain, sow thistle and vetch, our torts will missout on a huge amount of vitamins and minerals that they would get from natural grazing in the wild. in these circumstances, surely a diet that is 100% of the required nutrition is the best option?

i am not suggesting that everybody switches to a dried diet, just that people try to look at things from a slightly diffetrent perspective and respect the fact that some people are prepared to try these things out in the name of advancing husbandry techniques and improving things for the one common link we all share, our tortoises.

I think there's a time and a place for dried diets... for instance I understand why Ed uses it as it would be extremely hard for him to provide a total weed diet for the amount and size of tort species he has. Plus I'd imagine the ground where he is dries out pretty quickly in the summer which would make it difficult to grow enough.

I think the people, on here, who don't agree with the dried diets are mainly med species owners... let's face it, we have the right climate for growing plenty of weeds and it's far more beneficial to the torts to let them wander and graze outside than feeding a bowl of dried food to them. In some ways I think we can provide as good as the diet they would get in the wild... the majority of med species live in areas where very few plants grow throughout the dry, hot, summer months and have access to far less than 35 varieties of plants (proven by examining stomach contents of med species). It's only spring and autumn they have a good variety.... we can provide that all year round if we choose to.

claire does not like it claire prefers weeds,ed if you cant provide weeds buy some seeds, try the difrent diet that we all use and then see what you think of it,
i have used pellets with my hermans they came in a viv and were fed pellets,i took them to vet she said shells were bad down to nutrition and diet, they were fed only pellets,i rehomed the herman 's sadley and they are thriving on a weed diet much more active to what they were when on pellets.
This is y i dont like them
and y i prefer natural food

i hope this clears things up 4 u
