It would be illegal to sell any tortoise that requires papers if you don't have the papers.

You need to get papers for them in order to sell them and they can't just be the 'breeding certs' which are sometimes supplied to people. If they are over 100mm they will need to be chipped first. If you are unable to obtain the correct certs rehoming will be the only way forward.

Yes im afraid you can only sell if you have paper.

I believe you can self certify in certain circ's - spk to DEFRA again.

It takes as long as it takes <g> Sometimes they do a pretty quick turn around and they are back in a couple of weeks, but I have heard of people waiting months. I don't think charges have been brought in yet, although they have been mentioned for the future at something like £10 per tortoise being certified.

The cert that does not allow you to sell on is the 'breeders' cert I reffered too. You would have to check with DEFRA on which cert they will supply to you in your circumstance.

You can give them away free if they don't have paperwork. You just can't sell them.

If they are in unsuitable housing, I would re-home them ASAP.

Contact Tamie at the tortoise trust, she is excellent and will be able to find a perfect home
