This will be the first summer with my tortoise so I have a question...

Would my tort be okay in being in a rabbit hutch with umm.. straw or such and then turn it to face a wall so there isnt a danger of, rats or such chewing the wire. But without heating?

And then during the day, put her in an enclosure with wire mesh across the top to prevent intruders etc.

I don't know Would she get too cold?

Hello again people!

Ive built my beast now, and understand i will need a little "house" with a heat lamp just incase it gets cold, so, would it be a good idea too use my old viv? its in the shed gathereing dust, and i reckons if i put a heat lamp in there and made it so he could come and go when he pleased, inside the encloser?

Good idea, bad idea?

pfft! i was just asking a question!
you CAN get rabbit hutches WITHOUT ramps.
if you dont have any advice for me, please dont waste your time in replying with something like you did.
if you read my post, it said a rabbit hutch at night and then a DIFFERENT enclosure during the day.
a rabbit hutch enclosure would be way too small!

Here are my Red Foots out side, the noise is the other half with the hoover, and the little dog at the end is Bramble a glen.

Outdoor enclosure for hatchlings, on castors so it can be moved around easily:

Or an easy to build yourself version (only suitable if under supervision really though):

Good article.

In some areas you need to be careful about mesh size on your enclosure as rats will also happily eat or mutilate a sleepy tortoise in the night.

With regards lamps, if you put your inside lamp outside, it will almost certainly be damaged (and potentially dangerous) if it rains or becomes damp. Waterproof garden spotlights are best out in the open. I prefer to put my lamps inside one of the hutch/shelter/kennel/greenhouse parts of my outdoor enclosure. This way your tortoise can always find somewhere sheltered and warm.
