No, it's not acceptable at all. Just like you wouldn't keep a leopard gecko with a tokay.

If you're interested in keeping a tortoise though I'm sure there'd be lots of people in shelled willing to answer any questions you have

Hiya shane,

Where would you plan to let them out together, outside?

Either way while the beardie has pretty strong jaws, he's unlikely to be able to do the tort much damage. He could however annoy him rather a lot and on the flipside, if your tort gives your beardie a nip I think we're talking lost toes, feet or tail bits. Best not eh!

There is never any good reason for a shop to mix species in their sales vivariums.
It increases the risk of the animals they sell having various nasty parasites or problems and means whoever buys them is likely to buy a substandard animal that has had to tolerate inappropriate conditions with a usually mismatched housemate.

Shops that do this are simply greedy. Trying to cram more poorly cared for animals in to flog off than they can really house.

*steps down from the soapbox...*
hehe

there is a shop in liverpool that has a cupbard style arboreal viv. they have two full grown iggys in there and they rotate the tortoises that on display. One week its redfooots in the bottom and the next week its sulcatas. no change of substrate, no cleaning and tortoises with white and brown iggy plop all over there shell. We dont even buy our crix from there now, used to be an ok shop but after i got into an arugment with the woman that runs it i dont go back. She tried to tell me that her "sul-tac-car" tortoise was fed a perfect diet and had no pyramidding whatsovever. and i told her she should be locked up for slowly trying to kill a "sulcata" with a diet of cat and dog food and vegetable with fruit. The diet has appeantly changed to rabbit pellets and my friend was told, "well there made of grass aint they!". lovely people, half dead stock. such a shame that people are allowed to treat animals in such a way.

I've seen torts being kept with beardies in a pet shop and I thought it was odd. The worst thing is cause they are shops you automatically think thats it's ok to do this. There should be something done about it really.
