Best avoided... but not too serious if your tort does eat one.

I think if you want to use pots or tubs to grow weeds you need to get really deep ones, and don't use good quality soil in the tubs!

I grow weeds in a few tubs, and also in a small sectioned of part of the garden. But at this time of year I am out and about picking weeds. I keep mine in a plactic bag in the fridge and they last ages then

ok - I went out looking for weeds today (thanks to all the advice here ) but wanted to check 2 things.
1. Is sow-thistle the same as normal thistle that you see growing wild all over the place?
and
2. Can tortoises eat groundsel? I couldn't see it on the lists but then wasn't sure if I'd just missed it!
thanks

I go for a walk and take a bag and try to pick enuff for 2-3 days. I am growing some in the garden now too i have got the bit at the bottom for weeds. It has always been left alone for butterflies so it was always there. I have sprinkled a few dandi clocks in there now so fingers crossed

Hi just a thought but I know some supermarkets now in London stock bags of dandelion like you get lambs lettuce, it might be worth looking out for. It's becoming very popular in salads.

Thanks everyone
I had no idea they were selling bags of dandelions - will have to keep an eye out for those.

I'm off to the garden centre tomorrow to get some of the edible flowering plants - I reckon I can probably plant them out in the garden here without anyone minding (weeds they do mind!) and am going to plant up a load of pots and trays with them too

So I guess groundsel is something I better avoid for now til I can find out for sure if it's ok or not - I only ask because there was tonnes of it about!

I'm still not sure whether the thistles I saw were Sow Thistles though

Don't forget that any plants you buy from the garden centre will most likely have been treated with pesticides so wait for the new growth before feeding them to your tort. New growth should be pretty quick now that the weather is warming up.

Thanks - the garden centre is more of a small, private nursery but you're right they probably use some sort of chemical somewhere along the line so will be safe and wait for new growth.

Am so excited about it! silly isn't it!

Just found a piece of useful information... apparently dandelion leaves are more commonly found in supermarkets under their French name of pissenlit.
