Default Do Tortises Smell?

Hi my cousin is wanting to get a pet tortiose! (a little like me! but im wanting a snake)
But her Mam and Dad says no (like my mam and dad too!)
Were thinking Great Minds think alike (me and her) but Idiots seldom differ (our parents)
Shes 9 so this would be her first pet that is hers that would require more attention than a fish and she wants to ask you experts a few question!
Thanks for any help you can give her!

Hi!
My mams argument is that Tortise smell and that they will stink up the house, so is that true?
Also, most caresheets I've looked at are quite varied on feeding, so how often do you guys feed them?
And I was thinking about getting a Herman or a Horsefield. Is there one you would recommend out of the two? Or even just a better one altogether?
Thank You!
Fae Lorcans Cousin

Tortoises don't smell... their poo does but if their tables are spot cleaned every day then no smell!

They should be fed every day on a mixture of weeds and edible plants which can be supplemented with suitable supermarket salads when there's not many plants/weeds about.

Hermann or Horsfield are good for a beginner... both hibernate.

Don't forget the tort will need to have an outdoor enclosure for the summer also.

Index of / there's a link to my website, which should give you some good information keeping your tortoise

it should not smell like that, Can you leave the glass open a bit without them falling out till you build your table?

Hi Lorcan, would she appreciate a guinea pig more, they are certainly more aware of their owners and the interaction between them would be more enjoyable. My daughters both had guinea pigs as the first pet, they used to follow my daughters round the garden! just suggesting this as at 9 years old she may get bored with a tortoise of her own quickly.

I don't understand why a vivarium should smell. I have my Cherry Head in a viv. planted with small plants, moss and it never smells. Sometimes when I mist, or water the plants, it smells like when you frist mow the lawn. But, not a bad smell.
