Smile Going on Holiday

Hello all,

What do you do when you go on holiday and need somebody to look after your tortoise (s)? Would you use a tortoise boarding service such as "Tortoises on Holiday"?

I have holiday homed Leopard tortoises last year but I found that it takes them a few days to settle in - they dont like to be moved around and you need segregated areas.

You should not mix the species or even put your tortoise with any others unless there has been a period of quarentine and this would probably be longer that you were away anyway.

I think leaving them in their own enviroment and having someone you trust looking after them is your best bet. Although I no from personal experience that can be difficult.

I'm lucky and have lovely neighbours who will follow my instructions to the letter with all my animals and my dog goes to my parents - I do repay though in kind and look after the neighbours animals when they're away.

There are lots of companies now though who offer pet sitters... they will come into your house once or twice a day or stay there permanently while you're away. I'm sure there must be some tortoise friendly pet sitters. It might be worth looking on the net.

i know for me the whole having kids and pets has put a stop on ANY holidays. I dont trust anybody to look after my animals for more than 1 night. My dogs are rottys, and while i know they are soft as butter, if they escaped or bit somebody i would feel i had let them down by not being there with them. The only person i would ask to care for my animals is my sister and as she works she wouldnt be able to spare more than 1 night. And i worry about my torts when i go to the asda to do my shopping! couldnt imagine leaving them with a pet service unless therewas a webcam so i could keep an eye on them.

Hi,

I leave my hermanns with a nice lady who has a few tortoises herself. It probably wouldn't be that hard to find someone fairly local to you that keeps torts themselves that could look after them for a week or two. I've dont think she experienced any settling in problems with them. As long as they have each other and their food they seem quite happy.

i have a lot of animals including horses so holidays are few and far between, the last time i went on holiday i got a neighbour to look after my parrot,my dog(rottie)went to the local boarding kennels where they know him as he gets his 6 monthly bath and nails clipped there,my horses were looked after by someone who had there pony there sharing the field,my cats went to my dads as he runs the local cat shelter and i didn`t have my tort at the time so really dont know what i`d do with her,but it is a total stressful time for us going on holiday as i worry constantly about my pets when i`m away.
