Default combined uv/heat lamp

Hi everyone
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice please.Last weekend i bought a combined uv/heat lamp. Its the Exo Terra Solar Glo 125w.I have noticed that it keeps turning its self off and then restarting again.I have read the instructions to it and i do relise that it has a thermal reset feature on it which will turn the bulb off if it gets to hot but it seems to be happening about every 10-15 minutes for afew minutes at a time. Is this normal, has anyone else got 1 of these lamps? Any advice would be appreciated.Im just worried incase Alfie isnt getting enough heat/uv.

did you get a special ceramic holder with this lamp? if not then i will take a geuss that it is cutting out as a result of overheating. If you did get the lamp holder too, then disconnect this lamp and take it back to the shop. This constant on and off will considerably shorten the life of the lamp.

These bulbs are very suseptable to power surges. If an electrical appliance kicks on and your wires are not large enough it will create a power surge. These bulbs operate in a narrow current range. They will quit. They will not restart until the starter has cooled down.

It is for this reason that I don't even use the bulbs.

Thanks for all your help and advice.Yes i did get a ceramic lamp holder with it.It seemed to be working fine for the 1st couple of days.Think im going to have to take it back to shop. Before i puchesed this lamp i used to have a seperate heat and uv lamps but after alot of research i decided to go for the combined one as more people seemed to rate it.Since puting it in Alfie seems alot more active.

I don't know about the Exo Terra ones, but I use the T-Rex/Megaray bulbs and some of them do tend to turn themselves off and on a bit in the first few days when they are brand new, then they settle down and don't do it any more. I've had my oldest one about 16 months now and it's still working fine.

I have never had a problrm with any of my combined uvb lamps. They shouldnt really turn themselves off, except for the odd very rare occasion. A stop and start cycle will considerably shorten the life of the lamp, and mine has only ever cut out when it was in the greenhouse on the hottest day of the year. And once when it became dislodged and went wonky! Take it back to the shop and get an exchange, if it still happens with your next one then i would get a better, qualified opinion!

I guess my experience with this bulb is quite limited having only used them for about 10 years... and even then I only used 10 or 15 bulbs at a time.

I guess I just got the odd batch... or 2... or 3...

The are the best thing to hit the reptile market since... Mazuri tortiose diet but they are not a necessity and they do have their problems.

If you can accept that... I highly recommend them.

ed, i meant an electrician, ie, maybe there was a fault on the wiring! not slandering you , and would never question your experience. But i too have used these lamps for quite a few years and more than just a few at a time. i have three in one greenhouse and many more in other setups and not just with tortoises. chill

and even though i choose to use a weed diet i have never questioned what you choose to use for your torts, i value the experience and results you have achieved so take a breath, we dont all think you are the antichrist!
