Bearing in mind where it was found I'd say it's most likely a European Pond Turtle, they are found across most of Europe and there are quite a few regional colour variations.
The overall shape, and the dark almost black skin with yellow spots are quite typical. If you do a Google Image search for Emys orbicularis you'll find lots of photos, many of which look just like this one.

Yes that was my only reservation! You see lots of variations in carapace patterning, and in skin patterning too, but I don't think I've seen one with that eye colouring before.
But as I said bearing in mind where it was found, and assuming it's not an escaped pet, then there's not a lot else it could be really. There aren't many European turt species to choose from, and in all other respects it does look very much like a European Pondie. Is this one of yours or were the photos sent to you? Can you get any more pix, of the plastron and the back end in particular?

This might sound totally nuts but it looks like a cross between a European Pond turtle and a North American Box turtle...
Was it a wild caught turtle? Was it caught in a residential area or an area close to a city or town? After a little reading... it's most likely a European Pond turtle. If you can get your hands on H. Vetters book on Turtles of the World you will see the shape and color is highly variable. There are a few examples of red eyed Pond turtles. Ed

Yes, it is an Emys orbicularis. There is a lot of regional variation in these. Fritz did a lot of work on this. There's also a good paper online. This paper also has the info on Fritz's publications in the bibliography.
http://jfas.ege.edu.tr/pdf/18_Ayaz_21_3-4_2004.pdf I've seen these myself in France, Italy, Spain and Turkey... even the shell ground colour can vary from a light brown to jet black. I also bred a few some years ago. Very nice turtles. Andy Highfield www.tortoisetrust.org |
