I would have no problem buying from a pet shop if I had the space available.

My concern is that there is something wrong with the jaw on this little tort.

I promised myself I would not post to this list again... I'm as flakey as the next tortoise keeper. (personal problem)

Tinker's is a nice response... rational... constructive... on point.

DONT go the rspca, waste of time and gives them more ammo cos they are anti exotics. if you still get no joy then go the local council and speak to the animal licensing officer. they have a duty to make sure all petshops are operating within the constraints of the law.

what is it that you are unhappy with in regards to the tortoise and the petshop?? does the shop have a good track record??

The pet shop itself is okay, its a bit muddled but its clean and all the animals had food, water etc.

I think its one of those shops that been there for years and they are trying to stock eveything for everyone.

I just need to know if the jaw should be protruding before I speak to them.

No... it shouldn't. It's probably a tade in or an adoption.

I wouldn't blame the shop for that.

(that's just me.)

Most Petshops have nothing to do with the lunatic fringe (that's us). They know we exist and deal with us on a limited basis... as limited as possible and still stay in business.

We have to recognise... we are not normal... and approach the situation as such.

With a normal person... if you respectefully pointed out a fault they would correct it.

Of course... there are the slimy shop keepers but I believe they are the vast minority.

IMHO(humble my ass)

Could you simply ask "I'm curious about the tortoise you have there. Could you tell me a bit about it? I have one at home and have noticed that his jaw is different to the one I have. Is it what they call 'undershot'? Is it normal?"
Wait and see what they say. You will not appear aggressive, nosy, confrontational, more like a potential customer who would like to know more before considering the purchase. You may also get told if it is a trade in, come from somewhere who didn't treat it right, had an accident etc.
