I'm sorry athy59 but there are many things on that list which I wouldn't feed to a med tort, for example:

Cucumber (unless in small amounts to aid hydration but not as part of a regular diet)

Spinach, parsley & carrot (high in oxalic acid which inhibits calcium absorption and should only be fed very sparingly)

Lettuce (some varieties are okay but lettuce such as iceberg has little nutritional value - a good mix of lettuce leaves which can be a suppement to weeds/plants are found in the Florette salad bags)

Peas and beans (high in protein and a minus Ca:P ratio)

Brocolli & brussel sprouts (contain goitogenic compounds which can cause thryroid gland problems)

Fruit (for tropical species but not med species on a regular basis)

This is an informative article on feeding:

http://www.tortoisetrust.org/articles/Feeding_FAQ.htm

A very good edible plant list for MED torts can be found here:

Diet and healthy growth

Below is a small selection of the types of food your tortoise can eat and things it must avoid.

Vegetables

Cabbage - from the brassica family: avoid all brassicas: brassicas contain goitrogens. These interfere with the operation of the thyroid gland and prevent the tortoise absorbing the essential calcium in its diet.

Spring green - do they eat these in the wild?

Carrot - Carrots are high in Vit A and too much causes a condition known as hypervitaminosis A which is dangerous to your tortoise's health and could cause death.

Cauliflower - brassica, see above

Spinach - brassica, see above

Beans - contains 'Phytic Acid' high concentration is found in peas and beans. This chemical also binds minerals as well as proteins

Peas - see above

Brussel sprout - brassica, see above

Cucumber - as Tina advised, no nutrional value - aids hydration though

Broccoli - brassica

Parsnip -

Lettuce - if you are going to feed any lettuce then Cos/Romaine is the best. There are absolutely no nutrients for the tortoise in other kinds of lettuce so it fills its guts with pap leaving no room for the good stuff. A little Cos is OK though.

Fruit
Apple - All fruit is high in sugar which causes excessive growth of the tortoise's gut flora and can cause intestinal problems (med torts)

Pear
Tomato
Grape
Strawberry
Melon
Plum
Peach
Blackberry
Apricot
Gooseberry
Raspberry
And some plants that are poisonous to your tortoise:
Lupins, Daffodils, Hydrangea, Lily of the valley, Foxglove, Mistletoe, Rhododendron, Narcissus,
Rhubarb, Hellebores, Crocus, Bleeding heart, Ragwort, Azalea, Vinca, Hypericum, Peony, Lobelia
Aconite, Tobacco plant & Euphorbias.

Hope this Helps.
I am sorry to post again but I am truly stunned that anyone would recommend such foods for torts - I hope, along with Tina's reply, that you will now understand why that list is inappropriate and infact damaging/potentially lethal to the welfare of a tortoise.

Tams - that is a really informative list - I only give cucumber and romaine as a treat or if I am trying to get them to eat with baytril on.

Just out of curiosity my adopted Leopard was fed a lot of Kale by her previous owners - is this in the brassica family?

Thanks!

Kale is a brassica, yes, but it is actually relatively low in oxalates and not a serious calcium binder.

Hope that helps.

Maybe i'll save the Kale as a treat then - she did used to love it apparently along with the dreaded broccoli !!!

She has been sounding quite nosiy again at night so I think another course of A/B's won't be far off !!!!!!!!!

Yeah, they work absolutely brilliantly. You shread them and squeaze out the juice from the leaf onto the sting. It works almost instantly, used them all the time when I was small.

IMO this list is an absolute disgrace and I cannot believe it is posted as a suitable diet for tortoises.

I have rehomed a tortoise that was fed on that and it is the most deformed tortoise I have ever seen.

There is a sticky on suitable weeds for tortoises ....

PLEASE REVISE THIS LIST and take a look at:

Not sure about it being clicky one here, may be on other parts of the board but I only really post on here.... But then I have no friends on here, so I wouldn't know whether the face fits or not!

I never feed any of my torts any veg or fruit, it is weeds only, plus grass and hay for the Leopards.

every one in this forum and in every single forum on the internet are aware of the bitching that goes on in theese such places as every one has their own opinions,
i agree people shouldnt rise to the bait but i for one had been caught up in this before along with the rest of this forum in some part of their life in some thread or another thats what forums are about expresing ones views .
as for the site geting a bad name why come to it if this is your reaction on some one expressing their views, wich i 100% agree with and so will 9/10 people, i understand you were only trying to help but if ur not quite sure dont pot as you have seen the reaction, this is just peoples way of telling you to stay clear of the bad stuff just stick to weeds,

no one means to offend they are all here to help seek advice and learn from other keepers of the same intrest,
i just didnt see that some of the coments in your reply were fair,
this is not up for disgusion as it will go all night like i said people have strong views and strong opinions they all want to help and offer advice,be greatfull for this
