I've never seen a heat mat used for a water turtle... You can increase the efficiency of the mat by placing it on the bottom. The only precaution is to use a rheostat and make sure you have at least an inch of air space on the bottom of the enclosure.

Yeah I'm looking at getting a new heating thing for the tank anyway, the room he's in is pretty hot anyway and it keeps his temperatures up to the right levels but Ill be moving him into a bigger tank this weekend after I get a new one for my corn snake who is currently living in a large fish tank so i should be buying new heating equipment and things for it in theory lol, thanks for the advice though at least i know what else i could get now
