I'd keep an eye on it, bathe it in some lukewarm water and get it checked if it doesn't improve over the next few days. Is your tort okay in other ways - eating, drinking, toilet etc?
I use a topsoil/playsand mix with an area of hemp as a substrate which I find very good and this allows them to dig down and bury.

He hasnt eaten today, but they both had alot of lettuce yesterday, i have bathed him earlier and tried to wipe it but i cant see anything wrong, there was a bit of sleep in it when he got up this morning but it came out in the bath. he was a bit loose when he went to the loo, but apart form walking round with one eye closed, he seems ok, when he does open it its only for a few seconds and he closes it again

You can get a tube of beaphar eye ointment from reptile shops, which is marketed towards lubricating eyes in reptiles that are having problems (do read the instruction leaflet but it does say that it is safe for tortoises), but if it doesn't clear up, the vet will most likely be able to give you an antibiotic ointment when you visit, which you should do if it persists.
I usually find too it is linked to substrate or dust, or from the cornea being scratched slightly, which will heal but if it is scratched, it is quite important to get an antibiotic ointment from the vet as this will help eliminate any chance of infection (weepy or crusted eyes might indicate they were getting infected) When you say lettuce what type of lettuce do you mean, and people might be able to help you if you describe the diet and supplementation you use, as a lack of the correct diet could make them more susceptable to illness if they are weaker.

If you MSN me please leave a message, don't just say "hi", I get a lot of MSNs every day from people I do not know, and I don't respond unless I know you, or you're asking a question / say what you want.

on different days they have different food, mondays they have nothing, tuesday is tortoise pellets(they love them), and the rest of the week varies from day to day, it can be cabbage, lettuce, broccolli, cauliflower, and sometimes a bit of cucumber or tomato in with it, with a bit of calcium dust on.
He does seem off today, he just keeps hiding in corners and generally saying 'leave me alone', normally he is the hive of activity, he doesnt seem to be trying to pass water or solids as if he had stomach ache although he did pass a solid in the bath earlier and it was green and loose, could he have eaten too much wet lettuce yesterday?, what should i do ?, just leave him be for a day or so?, i am worried. |

Same happend with my tort, however I am on the 70% top soil and 30% play sand. Im going to try all Reptibark.
Balders wakes up with a face full of sand and soil and wont move or open her eyes until its cleaned off, usually when I bathe her. This led to a lsight infection and now she is on some antibiotics. Try the sand an soil and see how it goes. 90% of people seem to have no bother with it. However a few of us redfoot owners have continued to have the same problem. |

Hi in my opinion this diet is no good for the tortoise, broccolli, cabbage and cauliflower will upset his stomach and will produce a lot of gasses,it is no good for a tortoise.cucumber and tomato are also no good to feed him either.maybe a little piece once a week but that is it! You need to change his diet and get him back on track. He needs to be fed weeds mostly, the more variety the better. |
