Unhappy Georgie tried eating a worm

I have georgie on the grass for a little while today, he loves to eat the clover.

Anyway I was sitting watching him when he took a real interest in something in the grass. I thought it was just a bit of clover he couldnt get but when I investigated it further I discovered it was a worm.

Not knowing if this was ok I removed him straight away and put him in his special enclosure.

Is this something that they do?

Does it hurt them?

Bob likes to eat woodlice sometimes and I had a fright the other day because Wurtle had munched his way through a massive snail - shell, body and all!

I think it's fine for them to eat the odd mollusc/insect/invertebrate unless you use any sort of things like slug pellets etc in the garden (which mist of us on here don't anyway cos of the tortoises!)

Ewww yuck. It made my stomach turn when I realised what he was eating.

I suppose they would eat them in the wild though.

They do (with relish) - they are natural scavengers. Their physical limitations mean they are not great hunters but they will eat slugs, worms, insects & carrion if they can get to it.

Watch them extract snails is fascinating! In the wild they would munch on bits of protein that wanders by, and they really seem to love the extra slimey stuff

Apparently they do it to boost their gut flora. The can also get protein from carnivore crap. Also I regret to say I suspect they just like the taste.
