Just to reply to a few things..no not phoned the police as yet but good idea, yes I have her on a petsearch site, also I phoned RSPCA and the dogs home (they deal with small animals too) I am open to all ideas to find her owners so please feel free to post any ideas, as I have stressed I am a responsible tortoise (chihuahua and collie cross ) owner, and do want to do the right thing on this, although some seem to think I am taking it lightly.
Her bubbling was fine the next day, and I got back from the vet's half an hour ago who gave her a clean bill of health. Pheeww think I've covered everything... Thank you to all who are wishing me well on this and will post some pics when/if I feel I can claim her, what would a resonable time be?? X X |

Sounds like you have done everything right Sue - I'm sure if mine went missing( god forbid) I would have an ad in the local papers - fliers in neighbours doors - notify local police station - so you have definately got it covered.
I'm sure if the owners do come forward they will be eternally grateful to you ... I know I would It is a shame that the lady put a description in the paper but I'm sure if the real owners come forward and are as tortoise mad as us they will be able to show proof/photos to you. I have loads of photos and videos of my 3 !!!! Even had a professional photographer round to photograph them - how sad is that !!!!!!!!!! Good luck anyway Sue |

If you lose a dog you have 7 days to reclaim it, after that it goes up for adoption. Well thats what it always used to be anyway. I would say 7 days is a good time. If the owners are out there and are looking they should find you in that time I would think. I was wondering, is it worth trying any local breeders and pet shops that may have sold that particular breed/species of tort lately, they may just have a record of who brought it. Sorry Im assuming its a fairly young one. |

If you lose a dog and a private person finds it and wants to keep it, the dog warden serves a notice on you which you have to agree to and which states that you are not allowed to do anything with the dog for one month. I'm looking at my notice right here. It's the environmental protection act1991 section 150(3) which states " I now give you notice that having made the necessary enqiuries you are permitted to retain the dog. Under section 150 (3) of the act you must keep it (if unclaimed by the owner) for at least ONE MONTH (their capitals not mine)- failure to do so is a criminal offence under the act. If an owner claims the animal and you don't give it back, they can take you to court for theft. Last edited by fenwoman; 12-05-2008 at 10:13 PM.. |

I've done my bit now so hopefully the owners are going flat out to find her too, It's down to them now! My daughter is a dog groomer and her boss advised her with the petsearch site etc. so we're all trying. She is very young and the vet thinks she is a 2008 hatchling, she also has a number in her shell, he thinks it is a girl but not 100% as very young, 'm still going with either a cat or bird having her, as she is in real good health, obviously does'nt belong to anyone local, and poss would.t have walked far...I dunno! |

I imagine the specific act goes for all animals not just dogs.Otherwise the act would be called the dog act or some such.Luckily I know the dog warden and he knows me which is why I was allowed to hang on to Chalky instead of putting him in the dog pound.
