OK, I've done a bit of a look at the herpes thing. One of the recorded symtoms in leopards was overproduction of nasal and eye fluids. Balders eye needed bathing to open it.

The treatment seems to be for the eye and throat issue. Are her eyes and nose getting better or would you say they are better? Looking at them in the same way the vet showed you they were blocked.

This herpes diagnosis seems very odd to me. Theres no way I can say she hasn't got it, but neither can I say she has. Its a bit strange.

Exclamation

Hi Tina, thanks for the info.
I didnt know they would always be carriers and that has really upset me, I wanted to get her a friend when I had sorted everything out :o(

What concerns me is that Lee doesn't know for sure that Balders has herpes as no tests have been done.

Also, Lee - do you realise that once a tort has had herpes that they will always be carriers and should be kept alone or in herpes groups?

Having just read the link Tina sent me, it does not look good for Balders.
Surely she must have been infected by another tortoise? She has never been in contact with another animal while at mine, But she was kept in a viv with other redfoots and a leopard tortoise at the pet shop (sigh) If this is the case im gonna bezerk.
Obviously its a virus, but can herpes just sporadically appear or does it need to have a carrier to start it?
The antibiotics have cleared her nose up, but her eyes are still watery.

I'm sorry Lee, I really didn't mean to upset you... I just wanted you to be aware that it could be passed on even after her symptoms have gone.

She might not necessarily have been infected by another tort, she may be a carrier and the stress of moving house could have weakened her immune system and triggered it (although there seems some contradiction regarding the herpes virus being passed from parent to hatchling). Yet again she may have been infected by another tort who was a carrier but showed no symptoms. Very hard to say.

Remember though Lee that she hasn't been definitely diagnosed as having herpes - well only by symptoms anyway. If she does have herpes you could introduce another tort by giving a home to another redfoot carrier in the future.

Exclamation Tortoise Poo

Well,in true style she has left me a poo. It gets a little gross from here. I smeared some onto a slide and had a look under my microscope. I have no idea what im looking for, but I didnt see anything worm like in there. I did however find bits of sand, soil and repti bark.
Her poo was solid. A bit squishy but a nice dark green colour. It seems "normal"

Good news about the poo! She always waits till you post on here about it doesn't she! What magnification is the microscope? Someone may know if its enough to see any worms if they are present.

Sounds like the sand needs to go. If you are using slate or something else flat you might need more of a dish if you find she is pushing the food onto the substrate before eating. My little ones sometimes push stuff off if its fruit or something tasty and I haven't cut it up much. They generally stop eating it when its got too dirty (they are on peat and orchid bark - the large size bark I think). Same with the big ones and cuttle fish. They only like it when it is nice and bright white. Once mucky they aren't interested. A bit irrelevant but another observation.

Has she eaten anything in the last couple of days? Any success with the different 'build up' foods?
