i know that some turtles can be kept in outdoor ponds over the summer, as some people do this on this site
just wondering though, would a common snapper be ok in a pond through the summer thanks |

It would be fine, Common Snappers are one of the hardiest species of turtle.

If you want to bring it in then yes, end of Sept, maybe into Oct if temps are still fairly high.
But given a suitable pond it should be OK to hibernate, they are very hardy turts, assuming of course that you don't mind not seeing it for several months every winter!

Snappers are great turtles for anyone with the room. They are hardy as far as temps, eat anything and everything, and don't need as much basking as others.
I live in southern USA, and I keep my snapper outside year round. She "goes under" in late October and arises in March or April. She is full of personality, and quite fun...but yes, keep the fingers far away. They will get away if possible, they travel over land to find mates, and they are large and strong, so that is something to consider. Otherwise, really one of the funnest types of turtles we've kept. |
