Default Extinct Indian Ocean Giant Tortoises

I pulled this story off the Telegraph website. It's quite interesting & tells a sad story as the only Indian Ocean Giants left are the Aldabra's

Hi all

I was lucky to spend a long period at Aldabra Atoll in the nineties, whilst working aboard the SY Fantasea II.

There are so many tortoises there that you would not believe !!!! also virtually every hotel on Mahe has many specimens gracing its grounds... I cant see a problem occuring with the gene pool. It is a shame that they are not in every place that they once were, but maybe they are now where they are best ( Ie totally protected with no predators, and more importantly NO HUMAN INTERFERENCE ) !!!!!

Just a thought

Chris

What was the situation to where you were on Aldabra?

That had to have been a total dream.

Any photos?

Ed
