Nice turts, easy to keep and don't get huge, but they are a tropical species and need heated water even as adults, and they can't go outdoors even in summer like temperate species can.

Yes they have exactly the same basking requirements as other turts so need a UVB and a heat lamp, the basking spot can be at the higher end of the normal range, ie 34-35°C, and water around 26°C.

I have heard them recommended as one of the best turtles you can get in terms of personality and hardiness. Also don't know if you're aware of this but they are side necked turtles, which means that they have that rather interesting way of pulling the head in to one side and just staring out at you with one eye.
They are very widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. Apparently most Africans won't eat them because the meat stinks. |
