as shelley has said, any tortoise can be freed of parasite burden, but as soon as you introduce them to the great outdoors, you automatically introduce foreign bodies and the possibility of re-infection. hence the reason why its so necessary to get an annual fecal check done. my bearded dragon was given the all clear from the vet for parasites just 6 months ago. in the course of learning to do fecal checks myself. yesterday i found she had a little tiny amount of coccidia, but a tiny amount is perfectly tolerable. in bearded dragons!

this is where it comes in handy getting a good vet to do the fecal check. there are thousands of parasites, some of them are friendly or "commensal" and some of them are bad. what is good ( even necessary) for one animal will do serious damage to a different species. so a vet needs to know what is a tolerable burden and what should be gotten rid of. and again, some parasite burdens can only be controlled, they cant be fully eliminated.

i am glad the vet seems to be aware of whats up with the little chap. the anti-inflammatory will do the world of good. how many doses of wormer has she suggested for him to have?? it is often administered over a few days to be most beneficial. Are you going to learn to tube him yourself? its not quite as daunting as you may think!

any good vet should be happy to show you how to perform basic things like tubing, and injecting ABs. as we all know torts can be "awkward" when getting treated at the vets. my vets favourite line with the leos is "well, the shell is healthy" cos thats all they get to see! its a matter of having to learn as otherwise they wouldnt be treated. i ahve only ever tubed baby leos , the adults are far oo strong to fall for it. apparently meds are quite a bit more timid and i know a few people that have trained their torts to open there mouths for a syringe full of pnacur followed by a slice of cucmber. Not the leos though!
