Sounds like your looking for a "starter" tort. I would say a Hermann tortoise, these are small species and rarely grow in excess of 25cm. These are ideal for anybody starting out. Please make sure that you have done the proper research before you buy and have correct accomodation and UVB lighting etc.
Also please buy from a UK CB breeder, a list of which can be found here:**UK CB list** And make sure you do a thorough inspection and ensure that the tort has the correct documentation, namely an article 10 (DEFRA) certificate. Here you will find a list of what to look for in a healthy tortoise : Healthy Tort checklist

Hope this helps,
Carl

Med tortoise species such as hermanns, spur-thighs and marginated plus of course horsfields are all good starter torts which only grow to a medium size.

This thread has lots of links for info on med tortoises including feeding, housing, selecting.

MED TORTOISES... useful links

Let us know if you have any specific questions

horsefield, spur thigh (not african spur thigh), leopard can be quite a good starter tort sometimes, marginated
