Default Alternative substrates to hemp

After hearing about the Tortoise that died after ingesting Hemp , I thought a thread where people could suggest alternative substrates would help those wanting to steer away from the hemp - so fire away with any suggestions...

I think we need to hear the full story about this with vets autopsy report.
I had a problem with hemp about a year ago and told people about not using it with mating tortoises.

I use top soil mixed with play sand but found it too dusty so put a layer of hemp on top for my babies.

I use repti bark with my baby reds

I've used hemp for 6 months now with no problems. I've found it to be an excellent substrate - its cheap, convenient & the tortoises like to burrow in it. I'm not willing to write it off as a substrate on the basis of few bad stories. My guess is that this type of accident is incredibly rare & 99 times out of 100 you can use this stuff without any disasters.

Would repti bark be suitable for a 18 month old hermann?

Quite so - I had a tortoise with a really nasy eye infection last year. I was putting in eye drops supplied by my vet. I was getting no where until I changed from sand & soil to hemp.

I have a sand / soil mix and a sleeping area of hemp in my torts table...

She is an 18month old Hermann.

What is the general opinion on best substrate for this age/size of Hermann ??

Cheers
