well yesterday night i turned over the nesting site in the greenhouse, mixed lots of soft crumbly compost in with it and did the kettle trick. today there has been a little digging activity in the nesting area, but no eggs laid. have addded more water and covered it again but nothing.
i have removed any big lumps of clay and rocks etc and positioned a basking lamp over the area to keep it warm. the nesting site is also in the exact spot that gets the most sunlight all day, so am hoping its the logical place. so, how soon until i need to worry? |

hi is one of yours acting gravid and do you know for certain which one because if you do it might be an idea to try giving her a little time alone with access to the nest site my big girl is being a real pain and for the last 2 days i have given her an old plastic dog bed in the greenhouse with water in so she could have a soak if she wanted so all she has done is got in and out of it constantly ,still not digging though.i think my problem is this is unfamilier to her and she wants to nest in her own enclosure unfortunately the soil in the leopards enclosure is infill and there is no real depth to it without hitting rubble so its no good. i plan on creating an area where they can nest but will reqiure a couple of ton of soil being delivered and im a little skint at the minute.maybe next year.

i am pretty sure that its gracie (big burnt girl) as she laid the dud egg a few weeks ago and my son said he saw her digging with her front legs tonight. she gave up on the hole and trotted of to bed though.
i gave them a bath today, and brought the others in early to giver her an hour peace and quiet. she looked atme and went to her favourite sleeping spot. i have been thinking that bertha may be graqvid as she has been basking all day long and is suddenly much heavier than a few weeks ago. i geuss time will tell with both of them! |

hi Ali it sounds like she was testing the soil so thats good news i havent seen any of my leopards ever dig a body pit but one of my graeca gaeca does she digs with her front legs first then if she is happy moves forward and finishes off with her back its incredible to watch she is the only one of all of mine to do this it will be interesting to see if her daughter does the same when she is large enough to lay.

I usually pour hot water on the ground they have been digging at, usually makes them lay. I used to use vermiculite, but changed to pearlit after a friend was getting a higher hatch rate than me, now i get 100%
