I was under the impression that painted turtles were banned from export from the states, hence the relative rarity of some species here. I'm not sure exactly what species are banned but it is certainly limited - Graham will know for sure!

I believe red eared sliders and all of the painted subspecies are on the "banned from import list". Presumably the reason behind this is they were the two most popular species when the government decided something needed to be done, to reduce the amount of turtles being dumped after the novelty of having a "teenage mutant ninja turtle" wore off.

Yup... the price you pay for control.
If you can ever change the law... give me a call/email. Ed Quote:

I still want to know where this list of banned species can be found, and I'd really love to hear the logic behind the choices, banning RES for instance but not the other sliders, and allowing Snappers which are surely more of a threat to native wildlife that a small and relatively harmless Southern Painted!

I only know what I've read and heard from others, I am trying to breed mine but no success so far, this is only the first year of trying though.
If I'm successful then most of them will be kept for future breeding purposes, and there's a queue a mile long for any that I do part with!
