Hi i have just bought a hermann tortoise with what i think is an article 10 and i am unsure if i need to send it off and add my details to it or do i wait untill it is large enough to be microchiped. Its plastron legnth is only 60mm at minute. Any advise would be appreciated.

You only "have" to send if it off if you're selling it or microchipping it, but if you lost the certificate, and it wasn't in your name, you would have a tough time getting a replacement, as it's currently still free I would send it off now, it'll only take 5 mins and cost the price of a stamp - legislation is currently going through that will cost every time you want to update it, so I would urge everyone to update now whilst you can still do it for free.

You don't need to do anything with it - other than keep it safely - until you have your tort microchipped at 100mm.

Congratz on your new tortoise. Any pics?

Ideally weigh him once a week and keep a chart to check that he's putting on weight. Try to weigh at the same sort of time each week... for example if you weigh before a bath (when they normally pass urates and poo) then you weighed again a week later after a bath you'd get unmatching weights.

Here is the information regarding DEFRA changing to charging for license changes, it has been consulted on for quite some time now and I think both businesses and public have now been consulted but I'm not sure on what date they will make a decision or implement this practice, but it is looking quite likely to go ahead.
