I would suggest that you ask the original owner exactly the way it was kept...
Could be a little tricky seeing as they inherited it!

Well... that's going to be the first source of problems... That's like taking in a wild caught tortoise because the tortoise is imprinted with specific behavior patterns just as wild caught would be. If the owner or someone who knew the owner could be tracked down the problem is minimized because the important imprints such as food and habitat can be duplicated making acclimating the animal that much easier.

If this can't be done... good luck to the OP acclimating the tortoise.

Thanks for all the info.

As far as I know it was always fed once a day on lettuce and cucumber and was left to roam the garden. Glad two know it's a male as it's called Fred!

Any advise for the diet or any recommended reading what be great. I really appreciate the help.

I am wavering towards the whitei...

I have about 20 oldtimers now from 40 to 80+...all have settled in just fine......but then I run a tight ship!!..
Try weeds....as good a vareity as possible....if he takes to them then that battle is o'er. Dandelion plantain sowthistle clover etc...a few flowers...pansy snapdragon rose petals...have a look around at the Tlady guide to help id.
Make sure you sink a few trays /dishes into the ground filled with water that he can go to for a drink...rainwater for preference..point them out to him ...he will get the hang of it.
Even with older tortoises it is worth having a fecal done for worms.

If he eats...sleeps and is active in the day...carries himself well off the ground...looks clear eyed and dry nosed...you are on to a winner.

Worth weighing him every 4 weeks or so until hibernation....to ensure he is doing OK and it will give you some confidence that you are hitting the spot...

Good luck...I am passionate about my biggies!!

He's already trying all the plants in the garden.

As far as I can tell he's not ill but then I don't really know what I'm looking for! The eyes, nose, mouth etc all look fine though.

I weighed him earlier though I forgot to post. He's weighing in a 2.3 Kg, good weight or bad weight?
