we were told to leave the heat lamp on for 12 hours and then off for 12 hours, would this still apply if not using the heat mat, or should we leave he lamp on all the time?
sorry for sounding dumb but conflicting information needs to be sorted and you lot seem to know a lot more than the shop

12 hour on and 12 hours off is absolutely fine. he will need a drop in temps of a night time to sleep. aslong as your house doesnt get really cold, he will be great.

any more helpor advice needed then please feel free to ask.

Thanks so much for all the advive, I have lowered the lamp and keeping an eye on the temps to make sure they are ok, and will alter the height if needed (temp is 32(c) at hot end, and 20(c) at the cool end) I have opened the door slightly at the cool end to get better air circulation.

The viv will have to stay for a while but when we are confident tortoise is doing well will look into sorting out something else.

I found out today (after careful scrutinising of the tail) that it is a male, no name decided yet but Charlie seems to be the favourite option.

Once again, thanks for all the helpand advice, I am sure I will be back for more.
I am doing my researcher bit and making sure I learn as much as i can.

xx
