That's it, in fact that's better than mine which is just the standard dome, I haven't even seen these extra deep ones before, may have to get one for next winter!

The other thing with a Clamp Lamp is that the face of the bulb typically ends up about 15" from the basking area to achieve the correct temp, and it can be a problem finding something to clamp it to at that height. The domes just hang from the ceiling or from a wall bracket.

i use clamp lamps connected to a microphone stand. i geuss it helps to have a dad that owns a music instrument company. i also use twin microphone holders to connect two basking lamps to the same holder, therfore only needing one stand. hard to explain, but i will trawl the picture albums and see if i can find some pics. Oh, and flexi boom mic stands are good too as they are really adjustable!

Thanks again Graham. I'm glad you told me it needs to be that far away, I'd read about 12", which would just have been possible with the large lamp stand but not for 15". I can see I'm going to have to rethink what I buy as there's nowhere to hang from the ceiling or a wall bracket as the table is in a conservatory.

Thanks Ali, that might be a good solution. Off to look on ebay.

Would appreciate pics if you can find some.

One newer bulb on the market not mentioned is the new Lucky Reptiles bulbs. My early tests (for about 6 months now) show excellent results, but I doubt they will find favour with too many that use a combined heat / light bulb as they are designed to run cool. This way heating and temperature can be controlled sperately, something I have liked to provide for my animals for many years. The new bulbs have excellent UVB levels, and I have checked the decay levels once through the burning in period is over, and the results seem good. Full spectrum is provided at excellent levels, but the main benefit over the bulbs mentioned here is the brightness levels. Normal incandescent and mercury bulbs have a very small percentage of brightness levels compared with the big bulb in the sky, and although the Lucky Reptile bulb is still around half as intense as the sun, it is still up to six times brighter than the competitors. The difference in behaviour is amazing, appetite levels, and colours (talking for lizards here) are intense like they would be in the wild. Up to now my initial impressions are very favourable - just wanted to fill a gap in the suggestions.

I was looking at those a couple of months ago, couldn't find too much info about them though, do you know if there have been any independant test results published anywhere?

They sound similar to the 60W MegaRay externally ballasted UVB, which provides UVB only and very little heat as it doesn't have the incandescent filament, allowing the use of a separate spotlamp for heat which can then be inependantly controlled.
Probably of more use in an enclosed space such as a viv, rather than open enclosures like tort tables and turt tanks.

Dont want to start sounding like a shop trying to flog a product, but in all honesty I have them in open top enclosures too - up to now I cant report any reasons for not using them in this type of enclosure.

Sorry Graham, missed the other post.

I'm not sure about independant reports, I cant say I have seen any. But just on UVB levels alone, I can report that the multiple bulbs I have running, by using my UVB hand held meter, are providing excellent results for the last few months. One of my favourite results to tell is about a group of young Uro's that I placed one of the bulbs. Within a couple of days they had changed from their usual brown colouration At that age) to quite intense colours - and this was well before we traditionally expect Uro's to colour up (generally at about 2-2 half inches long they are quite drab). Not often I get excited about a new product, but these seem to be as good as we all hoped they would be.
