My 3 year old spur thighed tortoises generally live in my greenhouse. One of them hybernated over the winter for about 6 weeks and the other didn't want to. I put them out in the greenhouse in late March, and for a few weeks they were happily eating etc.. but around 4 weeks ago they both dug down around 5 inches and that's where they have stayed. Do you think they will be ok? Are they hybernating again? When should I get them out? Any suggestions/help welcomed!

Hi there, thanks for replying!
There is no basking lamp out there at the moment, the minimum temperature in there at the moment is around 10-15 degrees at night and early in the morning, and during the day it is at least 20 degrees in there. I know it is probably a little chilly for them in there at times at the moment, although they lived in there quite happily last year at the same time - so I am wondering why they are acting differently this year. Saying that they hybernated for 6 weeks each last year with no resistance, so that was different this time too. I think they like to keep me guessing! |

maybe try to put them under an artificial heat source for an hour or two every morning. they may be confused. they really do need to be active and eating in order to store enough food for the winter hibernation. have they been wormed?
